Joining a civic organization changed my life in ways I never expected. The connections mattered, but the personal growth mattered even more.
The Triangle
Years ago, while forming a Business Networking International chapter in Ocala, Florida, I learned about an important concept called the “Triangle.” (Catching name, yes.)
The idea was simple yet powerful: meaningful professional and personal growth often depends on balancing three important areas:
- A referral network helps us connect with people who can open doors, share opportunities, and point us toward new possibilities.
- A social network surrounds us with friendships, support, and the occasional reminder that not every conversation has to end with a business card exchange.
- Civic involvement gives us a chance to serve, lead, and contribute to something larger than ourselves.
Together, these three areas create a well-rounded foundation for growth, helping us succeed professionally while staying connected to the people and communities that make the journey worthwhile.
The Missing Link
Many people invest time in building professional connections and social relationships, but civic involvement is often forgotten. Yet serving alongside others in a shared cause can create a lasting sense of purpose, belonging, and fulfillment.
For more than thirty years, civic involvement has brought me extraordinary joy and perspective. Helping others through acts of service strengthens not only communities but also character.
Organizations such as
do more than serve their communities. They provide opportunities for individuals to grow as leaders, expand their networks, strengthen friendships, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Broaden Your Horizons
Whether you are beginning your career, approaching retirement, or somewhere in between, civic organizations offer an opportunity to grow personally while making a meaningful difference.
You may discover that the relationships, lessons, and experiences gained through service become some of the most rewarding parts of your life.
How might serving your community help you grow both personally and professionally?
